Fusion®
Series Treatment
Environmental’s Fusion Series Treatment Systems are drop-in wastewater treatment units designed for use in decentralized applications where the effluent quality needs to meet or exceed DWS standards.
The first Fusion was installed in Franschhoek in 2010 and today more than 1000+ units have been installed in 8 different countries on the African continent.
The Fusion is designed for use in residential, new sustainable property development, commercial, and community applications. Fusion is available in a variety of treatment capacities, from 1,700 lpd to 15,000 lpd.
The Fusion’s unique design enables it to be installed without a pretreatment tank, making it ideal for use on sites where space is limited. Effluent disposal options include conventional trenches, dams, irrigation or direct discharge.
Fusion’s modular flexibility allows to increasing the capacity treating any volumes required.
The Fusion Wastewater Treatment Plant (Sewage Treatment System for the treatment of Black and Grey Water) is a factory-build, Glass Fibre, Activated sludge technology treatment system.
The Fusion Wastewater Treatment Plant is thus not an ‘alternative treatment system, it operates exactly the same as any Biological Activated Sludge Municipal Wastewater Treatment plant but is just much smaller in footprint and has been designed specifically to operate at minimal Operational cost while achieving Legislative Standards.
The Fusion Wastewater Treatment Plant operates on gravity flow, thus no need for pumps (i.e. continues running cost). The smallest unit uses only 60 Watts electrical power, while the biggest unit (ZF4000, 15000 Lit/d) uses 336 Watts, thus extremely low in power consumption, hence yearly operational cost is VERY LOW. Given this low power requirements this entire system can be put on solar. We have seen that initial input cost of the Fusion Wastewater Treatment Plant very similar to other similar products, but when it comes to long term operational cost the FUSION WWTP is by far the most cost effective.
” Fusion is designed to be used both in urban areas and remote locations.”

Treated water from the Fusion can be used for toilet flushing. Where space is limited, the Fusion can be installed in walk ways or public open spaces.
Excess treated water can be used for irrigation purposes. Fusion is the only plant that can handle from one household to communities, from informal settlements to high income estates, from in-urban use to the most remote areas.
How the Fusion® system works
What differentiates the Fusion from other plants?
- Lower power consumption – up to 90% less than most other plants
- Single tank construction
- Tank installed completely underground
- Low noise factor
- Easy installation
- Low maintenance
- No downtime during service / maintenance
- Alarm panel – self monitoring no operators required per system
- Full nitrification / de-nitrification cycle
- Small footprint
- Solar options available
The maintenance programme is divided into three Categories namely:
Daily Visual Inspections
Daily weekly, monthly, or Six-Monthly
Six Monthly Major Inspection and Maintenance
Make sure that the Power is on all the time, Check if there are any Alarm or warning lights burning on the Control Panel, check which warning lamp is on? if there is a Screen, is the screen cleaned and free of any objects blocking the Flow through the plant. If there is a Storage /Irrigation tank, can it freely overflow not causing the flow to block the inflow of Sewage to the treatment system, are the Irrigation pump in operation?
Sampling of effluent (From the Treatment Plant, and the Irrigation Tank) for water quality Analyses? (This depends on the Legislation, or the owner requirements for affective monitoring of the operations of the system.
Programme on total treatment Facility. (Make use of the Agent or a Trained person)
Basic Layout of the Fusion® system
- When a toilet is flushed, the booster pump will start and deliver water from the tank to the toilet under pressure. A small amount of chlorine is dosed into the system, ensuring the water in the toilet is bacteria free.
- As the tank level drops, a float switch in the tank will demand water from LS4. The pump will start and transfer water to the storage tank.
- As the level in LS4 drops, it will demand raw sewage from LS1.
- The pump at LS1 will start and feed raw sewage to the Clarus Fusion WWTP, where it is treated and gravity flows to LS4 via a UV for sterilization.
- If LS1 is full and there is no demand from LS4, the excess sewage gravity overflows to the municipal sewer.
- If there is a high level in LS4, the backup pump starts and waste the excess treated effluent to the municipal sewer.
- There is a municipal backup to fill the storage tank if needed.
Do’s and Don’ts
Do
- Service plant every 6 months & send service report to JDCH20
- Replace UV lamp every year
- Replace Blower Diafragm & Air filter every four years
- Use septic tank friendly detergents & chemicals
Don’t
- Use harmful chemicals, i.e. Bleaches, chlorines, anti-bacterial sanitisers, detergents & -soap. It will kill the bacteria in any biological plant
- Flush inorganic matter down the drain
- Flush paper hand towels or newspaper down the drain. These kinds of paper take forever to degrade and may cause blockages in the sewer system
- Introduce petrol / oil / grease / engine cleaner into the system Flush paint / thinners down the sewer line
- Overload the system
Advantages of the Fusion Wastewater Treatment System:
1. No visual impact and does not take-up land (very small footprint).
As the entire system is installed underground, it is out of sight with the only visible components being the green lids and vent pipe. No land is taken- up as movement over it is possible and can even be incorporated as part of the garden.
2. Maintenance requirements are minimal
As no skilled labour or as in most cases no daily attendance to the plant is required there is no running maintenance required. If you do have a Hand rake or Auto Screen at the inlet of the plant you have to clear all the Debry from the screen on a daily basis.

Benefits of Floating Fountains
While the most obvious benefit of adding a floating fountain to your property is its sheer beauty, and serenity, there are other benefits as well. With the water aeration that introduces oxygen to the lower level of the water it starves out the nutrients that algae needs to grow and prosper. The aeration caused by fountains also effectively mixes algae spores into the deeper parts of the lake or pond so that they will have less available sunlight and time to grow. Floating fountains have the ability to improve the overall health of the pond/lakes ecosystem.
The danger of stagnant water lies in the fact that when there is a lack of oxygen in your lake or pond, bottom sediments release gases that can cause water quality problems. Proper aeration brought on by a water fountain allows for many of the factors of poor water quality to be mitigated.
A quality fawn lake floating fountain can be utilized for its ability to generate high levels of oxygen at the water surface as well as below keeping the water clean and healthy while vastly reducing the impacts of stagnant water.
Reduction of Algae and Weeds:
As briefly mentioned above, algae is an enemy to maintaining a balanced ecosystem. When there is a continuous flow of water from floating pond fountains it stifles their growth. Further to this, the increase of oxygen levels created by floating pond fountains comes a decrease in excess nutrients in the pond. The aeration caused by fountains also effectively mixes algae spores into the deeper parts of the lake or pond so that they will have less available sunlight and time to grow. This in turn controls aquatic weeds and plant life from taking over.
Reduce Mosquitos and other Insects:
Where there’s stagnant water, you’re sure to find menacing mosquitoes who use these small pools of water to breed. To combat this, pond owners make use of floating fountains that will aerate the water, provide movement and prevent mosquito and other insect breeding.
Removes Bad Odors:
Most times, where you find a pond or lake, an offensive odour can be present as well. This is because at the lower part of a pond or lake various gases are emitted that cause the putrid smell. Floating fountains release the gases and prevent gases with the increase of water flow. This process allows the hydrogen sulfide gas that collects at the bottom of lakes and ponds to be greatly reduced.
Enhancing Fish Habitat:
Fish pond owners see the benefit in maintaining an environment conducive for their fish to flourish. What’s even better than healthy fish is an environment where other sea life can flourish. .By improving the oxygen levels both at the top and the bottom of your lake or pond, fish life and other aquatic organisms can thrive and a healthier habitat for your body of water is created and maintained.
Reduces the accumulation of bottom sediment
Organic matter decomposes much more slowly under low oxygen conditions which can lead to a buildup of bottom sediment in your lake or pond. Proper aeration by the use of a fountain will help reduce the overall accumulation of organic sediment, potentially prolonging or preventing the need for future dredging.
Aeration brought on by a water fountain is a valuable tool in the management of your water quality. Not only is it a wonderful feature to add for the sights and sounds it adds, but it is an essential part of many lake and pond management programs.
